iMoov – Wireless Motion MIDI Controller by TangibleFX – MobileSword

iMoov Review

Wave your phone in the air, like you just don’t care! (And use the gyroscope motion to control MIDI CC parameters while you’re at it)!

Moov-ment

iMoov is an innovative and unique MIDI controller for iPhone that depends on the user manipulating the angle of the phone in relation to the ground.

The app uses 3 basic gestures, (wave, flap and twist), which turn the phone on each axis.  You get to create gestures based on these core movements and set up range values to send MIDI data over.

This sounds like a task that could be complicated and arduous to get working but MobileSword have managed to make this so quick and painless that you’ll wonder if you’ve finished setting up! (You have)…

Connecting

Connecting to your host as a MIDI controller is also very simple. Although there currently isn’t native support for the iPhone as a MIDI device in packages like Ableton Live, there’s a good walk-through in the app on how to get your iPhone detected as a MIDI device on PC or MAC.

Once you’ve done that it’s just a case of configuring the controls in your host package. This process differs from DAW to DAW (no pun intended), but should be a fairly straightforward setting in your program preferences.

Controlling

When you’re set up and ready to go you just need to assign your controllers! Using MIDI-Learn, this process is great fun and assigning controllers is a straightforward case of putting your host into MIDI-Learn mode and doing the same on your control in iMoov.

Selecting a fader, waggling the iPhone around and exiting learn mode puts you in control of your selected parameter! It’s that simple. Now you’re fader will move smoothly up and down with each gesture you make with your iPhone.

This is great fun and once you have set up multiple gestures, controlling many parameters on a synth or effects unit you’ll be waving your iPhone about for hours! Controlling sound in this way feels quite organic and stepping away from physical knobs and buttons lets you really jam with the audio and come up with great, spontaneous results.

Summary

Getting this app to market has been the culmination of 2 years of research into MIDI control and that research has resulted in a really unique and fun tool for adding expression to your music.

You relinquish a certain amount of fine control when you “play” your parameters in this way but a departure from the clinical precision of knobs and faders can be refreshing and is likely to bring interesting and unexpected results to your music.

Whether you’re performing live and want to put on an interesting and unique show, or you’re producing in the studio and want to inject some experimentation and freedom into your tracks then iMoov could be just the thing you’re looking for!

Great app, and good usability. Works great with my erktelon tm1 and blofeld and dark energy. One usability improvement would be to change the behavior of double tap to instantly jump to a fader values, to a single tap It would be great to add 1 allow custom resizing of controls,2 at least one or more global midi channels (a global a to global d channel setting for all controls, and then set the actual channel a to d in the preferences, making it easy to switch midi channels. 3 Also i would love a little midi keyboard, or at least octave switch up and down buttons which could be linked to controls mapped to notes.4 Pitch bend mapping would be awesome too 5 add stepped midi controller assignment to jump values by more than 1
